Received 12,9.2S a.m. London, September 11. General Buller on Saturday attacked a precipitous ridge in horse-shoe form, 1500 feet high. The Spitzkop road lay at the furthest point, while deep ravines prevented a turning movement. The position was carried under cover of artillery. The Devons operated on the right, the Royal Irish in the centre, and the Boyal Scots on the left. The enemy retreated over a narrow causeway, and lost many, though the mist sheltered them.

Shrapnel burst over a volunteer company of Gordon Highlanders, who were marching in column Beven miles from the enemy, killing three and wounding 16, but it did not interfere with their steadiness.

The total British casualties were 13 killed and 25 wounded.

General French, while marching from Carolina to Barberton, thrice dislodged the enemy, the SufFolks capturing one position gallantly. The 4*7 gun* were used with good effect.
