The Conciliation Board have reported tliat they are unable to bring about a settlement of the tailors' dispute, and they do not offer any recommendations. At the Theatre Royal this evening, Mr. A. W. Baker will deliver,a lecture on "The Boers and the Causes of the War." As Mr. Baker has lately been in practice as a solicitor at Pretoria, he should have some intetesting matter to lay before his audience, and as the subject is one that is popular there should be a large attendance. There is no charge for admission, but a collection wili be tasen up on behalf of the Indian Famine E'und.
The following trains will leave New Plymouth station to-day for the breakwater, connecting with steamer mentioned below:— G a.m., Gairioch (from North); 5.30 p.m., Gairloch (for North). Ranjitsinghi is keeping up his cricket form. In the recent match against Kent he scored 220 runs, this being his eleventh century for the season, a record.

Attention is drawn to the fact that as Mr, Leo Carri does not teach children in his "harmony" system, and his clients are ever amongst adults with rare exceptions, people of all ages may rely on the utmost courtesy. He says it is also an error to think the fingers become "set" and cramped after childhood. In his large experience with thousands of people, he finds they do not set for very many years afterwards. He finds the will and desire is the greatest factor of all to gst people along quickly. As an illustration of the wide-spread uses of this "simple harmony," a well-kuown Wellington teacher of music, no less than Miss Cope, daughter of Madame Cope, in studying the system, expressed herself as greatly struck, " not only with the plain form of rendering harmony practical, but as a first-class thing to teach to adults in general." On the 13th inst. a Maori girl 7 years of age, Annie Tewera, was warming herself before the-fire in Waverley Public School when her dress caught fire, and she sustained injuries which resulted in her death on Thursday. The Longburn Freezing Work*have closed for the season.
The Tyson estate has just come in for a windfall. It has been discovered that the deceased wool king deposited about £70,000 with one of the Australian banks early in the seventies, and the. money has laid unclaimed in the bank's coffers ever since,
Mr. Napier Bell has submitted a report to the Bluff Harbour Board on the proposed wharf extension on a large scale, the total cost of which is put at £91,862, The trade of tße pert last year exceeded £1,000,000. It is stated that the Board is now in a position to undertake large expenditure, and probably the work will be got under weigh at once.
Mr. R. A. Adams returned to Fatea last Thursday, after an absence of four moßths in the Old Country. Mr. Adams had a most enjoyable time, and looks all the better for hid trip. The Napier Daily Telegraph announces that it has been served with a writ at the instance of Mr. Alfred Pilcher, of Hastings, for alleged libel in connection with what is known as the "Inner Harbour Mystery," The total amount is £lOlO, made up of two claims of £505 each on behalf of Mr. Pilcher and his daughter Emily. At St. Patrick's Cathedral, Melbourne,_on Sunday week, 700 members of the Catholic 1 Young Men's Society received Holy Communion in a body. Among the civil cases set down for hearing at the Wellington Supreme Court sessions next week is a claim for alleged slander in which, curiously enough, the name of the de-fendant-is Tattle.
We understand that Mr. Samuel, whose health has recently been suffering from the effects of overwoik, will leave New Plymouth to-day for Auckland en route for Fiji, where and in the neighbouring Islands he proposes to spend several weeks. He has arranged with Air. Theo. Cooper, of Auckland, to hold his briefs at the ensuing sittings of the (Supreme lourt here. Tho Housd Bad an all night sitting on Friday. Subsequent to our going to press, the second reading of the Customs Bill was passed without amendment. The following were added to the free listOonfeotioners' moulding, starch, champering, closing, and dowling machines, dyeing acids, all agricultural machinery, bags made of New Zealand tow or iiax, and machinery exclusively for the manufacture of beet-root sugar. The Bill was read a third time and passed, and the House adjourned at 5.30 a.m. The Shaw-Savill and Albion Company are advised that their stemner Maori left London at the end of July with a full cargo for Fremantle and Albany, This is a new departur.\ and it is thought may be the result of visits of New Zealind'steamers with Contingents to West Australian ports. Another report states that the Maori has been chartered by Tysers. The Thames Gas Company, at the annual meeting, deferred the adoption of the bal-ance-sheet, pending a settlement of a disputed point as to the company's interest in a certain property transaction with two other companies at the time when F. A. White was secretary. All three companies, it was resolved, should dispense with the secretary's services. A dividend of Is. 3d. per share for the past half-year was declared. A Pretty Child, accompanied by her mother, entered a third-class compartment at Westminster-bridge Station the other day, All eyes were turned upon her. She was poorly dressed, but wondrously pretty. Although, as afterwards transpired, a townbred child, the glow of health was in her cheeks. And, after all, the basis'of beauty is health, h'ome passenger complimented the mother on the appearance of the child. The woman's reply was instructive.
