THE OPAKU RESERVE.
LEGISLATION TO BE INTBODUOBD. |PKR MUSS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, August 28. By the Universities Act of 1874, a reserve of 10,000 acres at Opaku, in Taranaki, was set aside for the furtherance of higher education in that province. Victoria College claims that a portion of the revenue at least should be applied to University purposes, but the Taranaki Educational authorities insist that it should be devoted to Scholarships for Taranaki children only. A Conference between the authorities was held on the subject, at which the College delegates were out-voted. It has now been decided to ask the Minister for Education to bring in a Hill on the lines suggested. The revenue from the reserve is .£270 per annum, and about .£3OOO has accumulated. [The above telegram has been delayed in reaching us, and appears to indicate that the decision of the late Conference is to be placed in legislative form.— Ed.]
