jTHE PLOT AGAINST LORD ROBERTS. CLUMSILY CONCEIVED. Received 13,8.45 a.m. London, August 12, Lord Roberts cables that the plot against' him was clumsily conceived. All concerned in it have been arrested.
THE BRITISH PRISONERS. NOW RECEIVING BETTER TREATMENT. (Received 13, 9.45 a.m.) London, August 12. Commandant General Botha has informed Lord Roberts that since importations by way of Delagoa Bay have been stopped, the 100 British prisoners at Nooitgedacht are unable to fare sumptuously, but are treated like burghers.
OPERATIONS jN THE TRANSVAAL. CAPTURE BY LORD METHUEN. THE EFFORTS TO TAKE DE WET, Received 13,11.20 p.m. London, August 13. Lord Methuen, on the 9th, captured six waggons and two ambulances at Buffetshock.
Commandant De Wet passed further north, and attempted on Saturday to cross the railway at Welverdiend, 35 miles southwest of Krugersdorp. General Smith-Dorrien engaged him, while Lord Kitchener at Gatsrang (15 miles behind De Wet), Lord Methuen a few miles further to the southwest, General Hamilton, General-Baden fowell, and General Carrington are endeavouring to surround Commandant Deiarey at Brobelar and prevent him effecting a junction with De Wet.
NEW ZEALAND CONTINGENTS. Wellington, August 13,
The confirmation of the death of Lieut. Berry, of the Third Contingent, was received this morning in a cabie to the Governor. It appears he died of pneumonia on June 10th, but the news only reached Sir Alfred Milner yesterday. Major Francis, in a letter dated July 3, reports the death of Trooper Mcintosh at Urntali. There was much sickness, but the New Zealanders had not suffered to the same extent that others had. All the sick were then progres>ing favourably. He left Marandellas on June 7th, with Companies 9 and 10, now A and B Squadron of the Four! h Regiment of the Second Brigade, and arrived on July 2. Majrr Davies's horse put his foot in a hole and threw him, hurting his knee. The doctor expects him to recover in a few days.
THE NEW ZEALAND BATTERY IN ACTION.
Wellington, August 13,
The Premier has received the follow- j ing cable from the officer commanding at the Cape:—"The New Zealand Battery fought two engagements last Sunday, and silenced the enemy's guns. The battery was in action three times on Monday. General Oarrington expressed satisfaction at the accurate shooting and good behaviour of the men under a terrific fire.'
