STRATFORD NOTES.

(from our own correspondent.) General' regret was caused here at the news of Eric Smith's death in South Africa, Much sympathy is felt with Mr. and Mrs. Smith in their sad bereavement. Things like these enable us to look behind the veil of glory and see something of the sadder side of war. Our old townsman, Mr. Biernacki, is in town at present. He looks hale and hearty, as if Auckland air agreed with him,

Several of the County Councillors attended the indignation meeting held at Toko on Monday night, to call attention to the state of the East Road. A good deal of talking was clone, but lam afraid it is too late to think of mending matters this winter. The settlers must just grin and bear it. The Central Co-operative are sending their leasehold building site in Broadway to the hammer. As this is one of the finest business sites in the town, there will doubtless be keen competition for it.

Mr. E. M. Smith, I* notice, is agitating for a railway to Opunake. It is a pity he does not agitate to have the Opunake Road put right through. There is no shance of getting the railway ; there might be a chance of getting the road.
