WELLINGTON EDUCATION BOARD.
DRASTIC RETRENCHMENT PROPOSED. (PEE PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Wellington, July 24. In consequence of the unsatisfactory condition of its finances the Wellington Education Board is instituting drastic retrenchment in several directions.] Notice of dismissal has been given to about forty teachers in various parts of the dis'rict, and the Board's grant to the Technical School is likely to be cut down by one third. The whole position comes up for review at to-morrow's meeting of the Board. Latek. The intimation given by the Wellington Education Board to some forty of its teachers does not necessarily imply the certainty of reduced staffs or sa'aries, but is intended to apprise teachers of the possibility of both and to give them an opportunity to make any explanation they may deem desirable. It appears that in many instances schools have been overstaffed and overpaid on the attendance basis, and as the funds of the Board are at a i low ebb it becomes essential for the Board to consider the question of lessening the staft' and salaries where I circumstances warrant it. It is stated ' that there has been a general fallingoff of attendance all over the rolony of late, ant no reasonable explanation can bo offered for this state of things.
