THE SAND PUMP.
A SUCCESSFUL TRIAL. Those wlio are anxious for the success of the efforts being mado to cope with the sand difficulty at the Breakwater will be glad to leam that tho new sand pump was given a fair trial on Monday afternoon, and was successful bejond the most sanguino expectatin. Tho pump was got going shortly befo. 0 5 o'clock, aud in the space of about half-, ail-hoar had pumped out a hole in the sand about feet in diameter by 8 feet deep. It had been felired that the sand would prove too heavy for tho pump to lift in any quantity, and the proportion of sand expecjed to be lifted was variously estimated at from 5 to 10 per cent; but at tho trial on Monday ono of those who witnessed the operation estimated that some 50 per cent, of sand was being lifted and carried along tho pipe without any troublo, Those-present at the trial were satisfied of the ability of the pump to do the work for which it has been desigued, which means an enormous saving to the Harbour Board.
