A SUCCESSFUL TRIAL. It had been felired that the sand would prove too heavy for tho pump to lift in any quantity, and the proportion of sand expecjed to be lifted was variously estimated at from 5 to 10 per cent; but at tho trial on Monday ono of those who witnessed the operation estimated that some 50 per cent, of sand was being lifted and carried along tho pipe without any troublo, Those-present at the trial were satisfied of the ability of the pump to do the work for which it has been desigued, which means an enormous saving to the Harbour Board.
