AN INCONSISTENCY.

TO THE EDITOR, Sir,—Headers of your paper owe you thanks for a timely repriat of the article entitled " Home Industries and Home Heroism." He must, indeed, be callous who can peruse Mr. Holmes't statement without a sense of sbame that such things should be possible in the capital of a nation so renowned for its advanced philanthropy as our own. What an irony that a people whost sons so lustily vociferate the fact thai " Britaios never shall be slave?," and who are even now posiog as the liberator* of the captive, the defenders of the defenceless, should allow these conditions to exist without more determined effort to put an end thereto! Odo can scarcely believe in the sincerity of the nation now fighting for the Uitlinder, when we contemplate the state of things in her own land. Surely the comic artist hit it ofl correctly when the other day he drew a cartoon in which the city arab is anxiously asking Britannica," Please, mum, aren't we black enough ?" while the dame in question is looking to a far-off land, with a view to end its conditions of oppression, and meantime has no eye for the misery at her very feet, We could do with a little less of the fulsome trumpeting of the unselfishness and patriotism of tu<British people if we could have, ah side of efforts abroid to confer freedom, more energetic battling with home conditions that are, if anything, moit terrible than the slavery attacked. I am glad that the press, in many quarters, is, like your own paper, aiding in making these things known..—lam, etc, Perplexed.
