CITY BAND SOCIAL.

A very successful social in aid of the City Band was held at the Theatre Iloyal on Thursday evening. To the lively strains of Mr. D. McKinnou Bain's orchestra, dancing was kept up with gre.it vigour till the small hours' of the morning, and all present seemed bent on enjoying themselves thoroughly, liuring the evening a vevy pleasing function devolved on His Worship the Mayor, who on behalf of the Band made a presentation of a case of pipes to Mr. Frank Newell, tho popular secretary cf the Band, In the few remarks made by the Mayor he alluded ) tq tlx© valuable services tendered by •

the recipient, not only to the Band, hut to the nuV)Jie, # ig ?e ci«»v. i n connection with the energy displayed in all the arrangements for the Band's assistance in celebrating the relief of Mafeking I Lady smith, and Kimberley and the taking of Pretoria and Johannesburg. The Band, said His Worship, did not intend their gift to be in any way regarded as compensation for Mr

Newell's valuable services, but merely as a token of their appreciation. After Mr. Newell had returned thanks for the unexpected present the Mayor called for " three cheers " for the Band, and this was succeeded by three hearty cheers for the Mayor. A splendid supper was provided for the visitors by the . Ladies' Committee Mesdames Dockrill, E. M. Smith, S. Hill, Frank Newell and Haigh, and Miss Nicholls—all of whom worked indefatigably to ensure the success of the social. A feature of the supper-room was the handsome table decorations, the work of Mrs. H. W. Cottier and Miss Jessie Cottier. Messrs. F. Thomson and F. W. McComish most efficiently carried out the duties of M.C. We have been desired to thank alt those who so liberally contributed to the supper, or in other ways helped to secure a successful gathering.
