Undaunted trained her guns on the Woosung forts for the purpose of overawing Shanghai. The Bussian gunboat Giljak was seriously damaged at Taku, while the Horietz was found to be leaking after the engagement. I The battleships of the various nations were unable to co-operate in the : bombardment for fear of hitting the ; gunboats which had taken up a position . closer inshore. The officials at Shanghai credit the Chinese reports that the legation was safe on the 17th when Admiral Seymour reached Peking. MORE DAMAGE BY THE BOXERS. A SECRET EDICT. (Received 21, 11.20 p.m.) London, June 21. The Foreign Office has received a telegram from Chefoo reporting that the Boxers have damaged the line north of Tientsin :tnd burned a Catholic chapel and many houses. The Chinese troops did not interfere. One hundred if the Boxers who attacked the settlements were killed. Further detachments of foreign troops have been landed to protect Tientsin, the Boxers having paralysed Chinese authority. A Chinese report states that a secret edict has been issued which orders the troops to join the Boxers. THE WOUNDED SENT TO JAPAN.'Received 22,1.30 a.m. Hong Kong, June 21. The wounded of all nationalities in the recent engagement (Russian preponderating) have been sent to Japan for treatment. ADMIRAL SEYMOUR'S EXPEDITION. (Received 22, 1.12 a.m ) London, June 21, , Rear-Admiral Bruce, who is second in command of the China Station, re- 1 ports on the 18th that there was bo news of Admiral Seymour's expedition, ( and that there was nothing authentic 1 as to <he legation at Tientsin being ® isolated. l The Admirals are co-operating and c there is the utmost harmony.
