DUBIOUS LIBERALITY.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—lt is easy for the editorial pen to dismiss the argument of my remarks on this matter as untenable because they happen to run counter to the received notions of political economy and a narrowly-interpreted Christianity, but, sir, to curtly reject a statement in no sense answers it. It would, I think, be more journalistic to assume that there may be two sides to a question than to shut down so promptly on a poor scribe who ventures to differ from a majority. I suppose your editorial infallibility would scarcely permit it, else would I be glad to further elucidate the matter from my point of view. Perhaps, however, you may allow me to put a case or two which have a local and, therefore, evident application. I have known many people in the old land who, through stress of poverty, have been trained to look upon butter as a luxury. Suppose the whole of England's population went in for denying themselves the use of this article, what would happen to Taranaki's dairy industry, and what the use of any further Stratford Convention, which you have rightly thought important enough to report at length, Suppose we all denied ourselves of the morning paper, what becomes of editor, reporter, comps, etc. ? Believe me, this matter cannot be satisfactorily thrashed out on conventional lines.—l am, etc., <£, S., D.
