POLICE COURT.

Wednesday, May 30.—Before Mr. R. L. Stanford, S.M. BREACH OF BOROUGH BY-LAW. P. Hendry was fined 2s 6d and costs 7s for a breach of the borough by-laws, by leaving a horse and vehicle unattended in a public street. RESCUING A HORSE. A. Morgan was charged with rescuing a horse from the ranger on the 26th inst., and pleaded guilty. A fine of 2s 6d and costs was imposed. BREACH OF GAMING LAWS. T. Allenby pleaded not guilty to a. charge of shooting a pheasant at Smart Road on the 17th inst. Sergeant Stagpoole prosecuted, and Mr. F. Wilson (for Mr. Weston) represented defendant. D. McAllum, seeretary of the Acclimatisaiion Soiiety, gave evidence that no license to shoot had been taken out by defendant. T. Mills stated that he was driving along Smart Road on the 17 th, and heard a shot from some adjoining property and saw a pheasant fall. He then saw defendant, and remonstrated with him for trespissing without per-1 mission on private property.

Defendant stated that on the day in question he had gone out with a gun shooting hares, and had one in his bag when in conversation with Mr. Mills. He did cot shoot a pheasant. One had flown past him and he had raised his gun and fired, but did not drop the bird. He had not taken oat a license to shoot, as it was seldom he went out with a gun. Would s.vear that he never had a bird in his bag. His Worship siid that it was clear from the evidence that defendant did shoot the pheasant, He could not und<rstand why young men, when they went out shooting, did not take out a icanse.
