THE BRITISH INVASION OF THE TRANSVAAL.
ATTEMPTED DESTRUCTION OF THE COLLIERIES AT THE VAAL. (Received 29, 8.55 a.m.) London, May 28. Field-Marshal Lord Roberts states that the casualties in preventing the destruction of the collieries at the Vaal Bivar numbered four. LORD ROBERTS PUSHING FORWARD. CLOSE TO JOHANNESBURG. THE ENEMY ABANDON THEIR POSITIONS. (Received 30,1.11 a.m.) London, May 29. An official report states that Lord Robert*, on Monday, marched 20 miles to the Klip River, within 18 miles of Johannesburg. The enemy abandoned successive positions whenever approached, and were just in time to entrain their five guns as some Westraliaus dashed into the Klip River station. Generals French and Hamilton were engaged ten miles westward. Firing was heard since noon. Farmers near the line of advance are Surrendering arms and horses.
