KINEMATOGRAPH ENTERTAINMENT.
The entertainment provided by the Ohristchurch syndicate at the Theatre Royal on Wednesday night was of a varied character, but the chief interest for those present was concentrated on the magnificent series of animated pictnres connected with the Transvaal war, all of which evoked applause and were greatly appreciated. Needless to say, the scene in which Lord Roberts walks down the gangway, on coming ashore at the Cape, evoked a tremendous outburst of cheering, as did alao that of the Gordon Highlanders, the demand for another view of the latter being so unanimous that it was complied with. A gruesome but remarkably realistic scene was one showing the execution of a Boer spy—the businesslike way in which the firing party carried out their duty relieving the scene of much of its horror. When, however, the ever-popular " Navals" were depicted driving the Boers from al kopje, the spectators were fairly carried away with excitement. The dash displayed by the men was quite in keeping with the reputation of the reckless, agile " sons cf the S3a," and the effect of their white uniforms added greatly to the charm of the animated scene. Another highly popular picture was that of the Black Watch and Irish Fusiliers on the march. To those who have not seen thtse regiments, the magnificent physique and wall-like ippoarance of the men came as a revelation, and evoked unstinted applause.
