THE NEW ZEALAND CONTINGENTS.

Wellington, April 12. The Waimate arrived at Albany at midaight. One man, Irwin, wad ailing, and two hones died, but the rest were all well. In fitting up the troopships to convey the varipus contingents f.oin New Zealand to South Africa, the Union Company expended on work on behalf of the Government between £13,000 and £14,000. It is estimated that daring the four months occupied iD the work 1000 men were employed. Five sawmills in this district were kept continuously employed for several months cutting timber for fitting?, beeidee which all suitable timber obtainable in the Lyttelton district was utilised. The total amount of timber tued was 578,000 feet, and 1300 sheepskins were used in making pads for the horses.

The Organising Committee of the Fourth Contingent has placed the balance of the fund for the purchase of 200 remounts. The Government has accepted the offer, and the horses will be placed on board here free of charge by subscribers in the colony. The following are the names of members of No. 1 Contingent supplied by Major Robin in his report as those in hospital and likely to be invalided to New ZealandA. R. Taylor, C. J. Smith, Sutherland, J. Walker, S. Arnold, J. Birty, 0. Edwards, J. T. Taylor, W. Parkes, J. Cabot. These aie in addition to those sent three week* ago. In accepting remounts from Otago the Premier states that they must be op to the standard laid down by the Imperial authorities. He quotes from Major Robin's report that worn-out geldings are of no use, but mares are valued. Mr. Seddon adds that New Zealand, by sending mares to South Africa, is doing a good turn to that portion cf Her Majesty's dominion in improving the breed of horses. The Ormazahan will arrive in the colony about the 30th April to take bones, and will leave the colony about the third week in May.
