DEATH OF TROOPER HEMPTON."" On Monday evening His Worship the Mayor (Mr. E. Dockrill) received from Colonel Pole-Penton, Commandant of the Forces, a wire announcing the death, at Carnarvon, of Trooper T. A. Hempton, a member of the Second Contingent sent to South Africa, the cause of death being dysentery. Mr Hempton was a son of Captain Hempton, formerly Town Clerk of New Plymouth, and was known throughout the colony as one of the finest footballers who ever donned a jersey. He represented Taranuki in many of the matches against the sister provinces, and to his sterling and dashing play many of Taranaki's successes may be attributed. Mr. Hempton captained the Taranaki reps, for a number of years, and many a game was won through his indomitable pluck and skill. An all-round athlete, a first-class shot, a thorough horseman, he the beau-ideal of a trooper, and the general impression was that a company of men of his physique would do credit to any part of the world. Universal sympathy is felt at the close • of a life so full of promise, and the deepest sympathy is felt for the parents i As sliowiriu fchn Psfnfiin in ivliieli Mr

Hempton was held, when the first rumour of his death was made known our office was besieged by anxious enquirers, and when the sad news was posted up there was an unanimous sigh of regret that the report was true, as everyone to the last moment had been hoping that the rumour was unfounded. To Captain and Mrs. Hempton we extend our sincere sympathy in the loss of a son who was a credit to them, and who was generally voted as one of " Nature's noblemen " and bid fair to become one of Britain's heroes.
