FIRE IN WELLINGTON.
♦_—_ [FEB PKBSS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, March 17. A new building in Victoria-street, recently erected for the Wellington Biscuit and Confectionery Company, was burned early this morning. The factory was a large two-storey brick building with a basement. The fire was confined to the top flat, most of which was burned out, The stock in other parts of the building was damaged by water, but the machinery was unharmed. A quantity of machinery in the top storey was destroyed. The building was insured in the Commercial Union for £ISOO, half being re-insured in the New Zealand. The plant was insured in the New Zealand for £IOOO, and the stock for £SOO each in the i Royal Exchange and National. Latee. Work was going on in the biscuit factory till midnight to complete an order for eleven tons of biscuits for the troopship Gymeric, about half of which was ready. All was destroyed, and the work will now have to be done by southern firms, The' loss is about £IOOO above the insurance, and some 40 employees are thrown out of work, Howden Bros, the proprietors, lost heavily some three years ago by another fire.
