The Daily News. SATURDAY, MARCH 17, 1900. ST. PATRICK'S DAY.
It will be seen by advertisement in another column that the Colonial Secretary notifies that to-day (St. Patrick's Day) is a public holiday, and will be so observed throughout the colony. As some misapprehension seems to exist on the matter, we may point out that since 1894 a holiday has been observed on the 17th March. As a tribute to the brave deeds of the Irish troops during the present war, and to mark the graceful references of Her Majesty to those deeds, we think i the public should strictly observe the holiday by closing all places of business to-day. New South Wales has decided to observe a close holiday, and our colony should not be behindhand in paying a tribute to the country from whence - has sprung so many of our generals who are doing such great work for the Empire and to the bravery shown by the Irish soldiers of all ranks.
