EDUCATION BOARD.
The Education Board met on Wednesday. Present: Mr. McAllum (chairman), Miss Heywood, Messrs. Faull, Wade, Adlam, Mackay, Cutfield, Allsworth, and Hignett. The Chairman's action in appointing Mr. Henry Collins temporary teacher at Bird Boad and advertising for a sewing teacher for Whangamomona was approved. A grant of £ for £ was made towards the cost of re-setting the colonial oven at the Tarata school residence, and 15s for re-setting that at the Wortley Boad residence. Messrs. Hignett and Wade were appointed a Committee to report on the question of the levelling required at the Fitzroy school grounds, consequent on the road having been raised about two feet. The Architect was empowered to attend to repairs to the roof > of the Bame school. i The Architect was instructed to report on the repairs required at the , Tariki school residence.
A grant of £ for £ up to .£6 was voted towards a shelter shed at Mangaere, on condition of the plan being approved and the work passed by the Architect.
The question of altering the size of the new school at TJrenui was referred to the Chairman and Architect, with power to act. The Architect's attention is to be called to the clauses in Messrs. Faull and Hignett's report referring to the old school building.
Pursuant to the wishes of the Stratford Committee, frank Burgess, a most deserving scholar, was granted two years' free tuition at the Stratford High School. The Registrar of the Victoria College and the Secretary of the Nelson Board both wrote relative to the question of a pupil holding more than one scholarship. The matter was referred to the Inspector for his report. The Chairman was requested to take steps to have certain sites conveyed to the Board. Miss Hickey's application to be reappointed as cadet at Opunake School was referred to the Inspector to deal with. A circular letter from the Ofcago Board relative to the insufficiency ot the present capitation grant was referred to the Finance Committee for their report at an early date. The Truant Inspector (Mr. Lister) reported as to action taken by him at Waitara, A copy of the report is to be sent to the Committee.
I On the leport of Mr. Mackay relative to the clearing work around the Denbigh Road School, the payment of £5 was sanctioned.
Mr. Hignett's motion to request the School Commissioners to purchase at least an acre of additional land adjoining the Kaiauai School was carried. j Mr. Hignett gave notice of motion to the effect that the Architect report on cost and desirability of removing |the Wortley Road School to the junction of the Richmond and Lincoln Roads; also as to the cost of- a new school and residence at the same place. Accounts amounting to £3i Is were passed, and the Board rose.
