Wellington, March 1. 1 The Agent-Goneral cables under date 1 London, February 28: —" Buller wires 1 that Barton, with two battalions, as- ' saulted and carried Pieter's Hill. 1 Warren assailed and captured the enemy's main position; 60 prisoners ' taken and Boers scattered." 1 Later. 1 The Agent-General cables: —" The ■ sizs of CroDj'e's captured forces confirm 1 my previous advice to you; enemy's ] forces greatly over estimated; authenti- 1 cated about 35,000 still in field, with > perhaps 4000 in reserve at Pretoria and : Johannesburg. Next stand by Boers 1 expected at Bloemfontein. Boers' total loss 9000 to 10,000, including 4000 to 5000 prisoners of war. Our loss about 15,000, including 3500 prisoners of war and 750 deaths from sickness." REPLY FROM MR. CHAMBERLAIN. | Auckland, March 1. The Governor has received the following cablegram : —" Her Majesty's Government thanks New Zealand cordially for their congratulatory message.— Chamberlain."
