MELBOURNE TEAM v. WELLINGTON. [per press association.] Wellington, February 24. There was a beautiful day for the match with the Melbourne eleven, and a fair attendance. The visitors won the toss, and went in on an excellent wicket, of which they made the best use. Fry was thrown out second ball, but Mailer and Graham gave a lot of trouble, and the next wicket put on 100 runs. Graham scored freely, but with small hits, and Mailer mostly looked on. Boundary hits were few ; still the bowling had to ba frequently changed before Graham was boiled off his pads for 63. With Trumble in the game livened up, and every bowler was hit freely. Tho tall Victorian laid on tbe wood in earnest, and quickly rattled up 53, including nine fours. He went at 198, and Mailer followed at 229 for a total of 88, including seven fours. Jacobs played a lively innings for 24, and then Aiken and Russell went in until call of time, each making 17. With ten extras the total reached 272. No chances were giveD, and the hard wicket made the bowling easy. Mailer was run out in a rather peculiar fashion. He played a ball, which rolled backwards, and the wicket-keeper knocked the bails off before he could recover himself and reach the crease again.
