THE BRITISH NAVY.
TO PREPARE FOR ANY EMERGENCY. ESTIMATES FOR A LARGE INCREASE. (Received 25, 6 p.m.) London, February 24. The British Navy is held in readiness for immediate mobilisation if necessary. The Right Hon. G. J. Goschen, Chancellor of the Exchequer, submitted the naval estimates, which total 27£ millions. It is proposed to build two new battleships, six first-class armoured cruisers, and add 4240 men to the strength of the navy.
(Received 25,10 p.m.) London, February 24. The Admiralty intends to coal the fleet more freely in the colonies. Mr. Goschen stated that he was awaiting the establishment of an Australian federation central authority, j hoping then to arrange a system of colonial naval reserve.
