TARATA.
(PHOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) The infant child of Mr. Tobeck (factory manager) died on Monday, the 12th inst., and w«8 buried in the Tarata Cemetery the Wednesday following. Dr. Valintine attended the little sufferer during its illness, but was unable to save its life. There is consolation for the parents in knowing that it has escaped a cold and selfish world, which is made up mostly of shams andfrauds; I leave it to someone else to give the brighter side of life. A very successful social promoted by the employees of Mr. Cameron (contractor for the road metalling) was held in the schoolroom on Friday evening, the 16th inst., apd was well attended by tbe youth of both sexej, and dancing was kept up vigorously until the early hours of tbe morning. Light refreshments were provided about midnight, and there wns no lark of nice things to eat. Mrs. T. Taylor and Mr. A. Govenlock supplied dance music on the piano in their usual first-class style, which Mr. G. Aiken supplemented on the violin with his wonted skill. A song was given by Master H. Peterson, who has a singularly sweet voice, and was highly appreciated. Mr. C. Nielsen acted as M.0., while the Benjamin brothers deserve much praise for the successful arrangements they had made for the enjoyment of all | present. All expenses were defrayed by the employees. The piano was kindly lent by the schoolmistress. The late rains have freshened the pastures beautifully, and the grass is assuming its usual green colour. A great deal of good has also been done by the rain to the root and fruit crops. There are some splendid crops of fruit in this locality thisseason, more notably Japanese plums and apples.
