THE GALLANT BAND AT MAFEKING.
A BRILLIANT SORTIE ON THE 2Gtii. GALLANTRY OF OUll FORCES. (Received 7, 7 p.m.) Capetown, January 6. An armoured train made a sortie from Mafeking on the 2Gth, with a view topushing back theenemy's cordon to the northward. The Boers were forewarned, and doubled their forces during the night. The British displayed the greatest gallantry, in the face of a withering fire, and endeavoured to scale it fort in an impregnable position. Eighteen were killed (including Capitain Vernon Sandford) and twenty - | three wounded. Colonel Baden-Powell, in his report, makes no mention of Lords Cecil and Cavendish Bontinck, whom the Boers asserted were wounded. BOERS USE EXi'LOSIVK EULLETS.
