Both men started at top speed, but von Cramm captured Budge’s opening service, and finding his length sooner, led by 3 —l. Budge, however, tlhen found touch, and, scoring with magnificent pasting shots, won five games in a row for the set. The German found Budge's speedy driving and volleying too difficult to counter and the American won seven games in succession. Von Cnamm apparently lost much of 'his speed and resilience, but fought hard, several games going to deuce. Budge won because of his greater speed. The match was one of the fastest finals ever seen at Wimbledon. Budge achieved, the remarkable feat iof going through the championship with the loss of only one set.
