STEDMAN DEFEATED
WIMBLEDON CHAMPIONSHIPS AMERICAN’S PLUCKY FIGHT Wins After Ankle Injury Press Association —CooyrlghtReceived 11.45 a.m. London. June 25. In the fourth round of the men’s singles at Wimbledon, the only remaining New Zealander, Stedman, was defeated by the American Grant, 4 6, 6—B, 6 —l, 6 — i, 6—3. The New Zealand cricketers were present to watch the match. Stedman had a long struggle against the American, who was handicapped by an injured ankle. The New Zealander won the first two sets, playing excellently, but apparently he decided to take a breather and lost the next set 6—l. He came again in the fourth set, but never headed Grant, who, despite his lameness, continued manfully and won the ninth game after three deuces, to lead 5 4 and take the set. He also won the next set and game. Stedman was unable to produce the form of early sets, and Grant’s steadiness, versatility and courage brought him a well deserved win.
