Crawford (Australia) met Andrews (New Zealand) who has the reputation of a lionkiller, and- a stern tussle ensued for the first two sets, after which Andrews lost form. McGrath slacked off in the third set against Coombe, who took advantage of his. opponent’s lapse to win the set. Coombe played vigorously, and won well. Results are: Men’s singles, second round: Crawford beet Andrews 6—4, B—6, 6—l; McGrath beat Coombe 6 —3, 6—3, 5—7, 6—2; Stedman beat Sharpe 6 4, 6 —4, retired. Men’s doubles-, first round: Menzel and Hecha beat Crawford and McGrath 6—3, 6 —3, 6 —2. Combined doubles, first round: Lee and Miss Dicken beat Coombe and Miss Lyle 3—6, 6—4, 6—4.
