MANY BIRTHDAYS.
“POOR KING GEORGE” Australian Rejoicing Latest mails bring the advice that King George VI. will probably celebrate his birthday on the actual date of that event, December 14. This is likely to be an isolated event, as tho Royal natal celebrations appear to be scattered all over the calendar. Like New Zealand, the Australian Commonwealth fired off its guns on June 9, but that did not stop the Australian States having parties on their own account. Here is how Australians celebrated the King’s Birthday: New South Wales.—June 9 was “observed,” but May 12 was taken as the public holiday. South Australia.—Ditto. Victoria. —Observance and holiday on June 14. Tasmania.—Observance and holiday on June 7. Queensland. —Holiday probably on January 3. New Zealand, to be quite sure of being right, has already celebrated two birthdays of a monarch who had ruled less than six months. It was no wonder that the Federal Attorney-Gen-eral, Mr R. G. Menzies, remarked in Parliament at Canberra: “Poor King George! With so many birthdays a year he must be ageing rapidly.”
