REPORTS TO COUNCIL Gleanings From The Meeting The total value o£ building permits issued during May was £6133 10s. stated the Inspector, Mr. A. E. Sayers, in his report to last night’s meeting of the borough council. Municipal Library. The librarian, Mr. C. S. Kelly, issued 3399 books during May: Twentytwo new subscribers were listed, and the total number was 299. Meat from the Abattoirs. During the month the follow-ing stock were slaughtered: Cows 131, heigers 53. ox 1, drives 8, sheep 274, lambs 66, pigs 61. The average age of the cattle slaughtered was four years, and .the quality was very good, reported the manager, Mr. R. Jenkins. License Fees Collection. The following license fees were collected, by the inspector, Mr. A. E. Sayers, in May: 578 drivers’ licenses, £143 ss; 16 heavy traffic licenses, £llO 6s, vehicles £8 10, ’dangerous goods £24, kerbside pumps £25, health £4 12s 6d, public halls’ £29, inspection building fees £43 13s, skating rink £1; total £389 8< 9d.

Electrical Supply. The electrical inspector, Mr. A. E. Pollock, reported that the bulk supply for Mlay had been very satisfactory, and (the voltage regulator was doing excellent work. The major part of the work done consisted of erecting the additional service line to consumers • in readiness for the Flick hotwater control. The number, of units purchased was 298,100, against 264,700 for May last year. Work on the Streets. The foreman, Mr. R. Richards, detailed the work done on the streets during the month of May. The formation of the new footpath on Regim Street west from Brecon Road to tne boundary was completed. Weak portions of Hamlet Street from Regan Street to Seyton Street were remetalled and the road top-dressed. All water tunnels had been inspected and attended to. The cattle ford from Fenton Street to Page Street had been improved 'and made reasonably safe. One hundred yards of shingle and 130 yards’ of boulders had been carted to the depot. Four road crossings land four sewer connections were put in. Uniform for 'lnspector.

A request by the inspector, Mr. A. A. Sayers, for a new uniform, was granted.

Road in Disrepair. Eight residents of Ariel Street extention protested against the neglected state of the road, a petition having 16 signatures appended. “We cannot obtain delivery of coUl or firewood,’’ stated the petition. Three trucks were stuck in the road on one day and others refuse to cart goods up tire street. The petitioners are to be advised that the matter of putting the street in order is out of the jurisdiction of the council, and that they will have to look to the owner of the properties. House to House Collection. Permission for a house to house collection was requested by the Stratford branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society. It was stated that the request had been granted annually since the branch’s formation 15 years ago. The request was refused. Esk Road Improvement. Councillor C. R. Finnerty was appointed (delegate to ac,t with the County chairman and approach the Public Works Department with the request that the department, supply an estimate of the cost, and if possible ariunge te have’ the' work car' ried out with the assistance of the Department of Labour. Cycle Races in th e Borough, Permission to start and finish cycle races in the borough has been granted to the League Cycle Club, but the council points out that white lines across Broadway would be confusing to motorists. Coronation Tree Planting. The request of the Coronation Committee for the donation of J-inch piping required for tree-planting was granted. Road to the Aerodrome. All application is to be made to

the Public Works Department for Flint Road and the -part of Esk Road near the Aerodrome to be classed as a main highway. Surplus Soil Wanted. The Primary School Committee it to: bs informed that the council does not anticipate having any surplus of soil- from the new baths site for disposal. The committee stated that the soil was needed to grass the large bare patches in the school ground. Railway Station Entrance. A letter from the District Engineer of the Netv Zealand Railways advised that portion of the fence at the taxi stand had been removed by hit l staff : and that the Stationmaster had been instructed ito approach the occupants of buildings facing Broadway, with a view to eliminating complaints in regard to refuse from their premises. Building in Inner Area. The application of Mr. R. Wood The application of Mr. R. Wood for a permit to build in wood in the inner area, was refused.
