TO U.S.A. VIA THE POLE RUSSIAN AIRMEN ARRIVE SAFELY Forced Landing Near Vancouver Press Association—Copyright. (Received 12.5 p.m.) New York. June 20. Twenty-four hours after their departure the Soviet has. lifted the veil of secrecy surrounding the attempt mlade by the flying aces Chakalov, Baydukov and Belyakov to fly to San Francisco via the North Pole. The airmen made a forced landing near Vancouver, Washington, owing to a broken oil line and fog around San Francisco. The flyers landed at the Army airport at 12.30 p.m. They will proceed to San FiUncisco after resting. The object of the flight is to test the possibility of a Moscow to San Francisco air service with an intermediate stop at a special meteorologidal station at the Pole itself. An earlier message from San Francisco states that the Russian consulate received a report that the Soviet plane crossed the North Pole 17J hours (after leaving Moscow.
