SHEEP WORRYING

MARAUDING DOGS Midhirst Farmer’s Loss Sheep valued Lf about £4O have been killed, or so injured that they liad to be destroyed, by marauding dogs in the Midhirst district within the past 10 days. The raids have occurred on three separate nights and in each case different dogs have been responsible for the damage. Mr J. Yandle, Denbigh Road, lost 16 sheep on June 9, four being killed while of another 16 worried 12 were so torn they had to be destroyed. The attack occurred during the daytime, while Mr Yandle and his family were away, but the dogs were traced, the owner shooting them. They were cattle dogs which, were chained up at night. On Thursday of last week three other Denbigh Road properties? were the scene of worrying, seven sheep being killed. One of the raiding dogs wias seen and chased into a river but escaped into a patch of scrub. Later it was found caught in an opossum trap and inquiries are being made as

to its ownership. Further episodes occurred on Friday night on the properties of Messrs G. C. and F. A. Schumacher, Beaconsfield Road. Eight sheep owned by Mr G. C. Schumacher were killed and eight more were badly worried and may have to be destroyed. Mr F. 4. Schumacher has only 18 ewes und these, in a paddock bordering a stream, were driven over a 15ft drop into the water. They were able to scramble up the opposite b'ink into a neighbour’s property. The dogs then turned their attention to a number of yeiarllng heifers, which were found on Saturday morning all over the farm, having been put through the fences of the paddock In which they were grazing. Although very excited they were not injured. No trace of the dogs was found but loladed shotguns are ready should there be a repetition.
