THE BATTLE OF THE SITES
ISLAND STATION?
RAILWAY PROPOSALS
Location Near Triangle
Mentioned
Whether the site of the Stratford railway station should remain as at present and the extra yard accommodation secured by extending southwards across Fenton Street, or whether the station site should be removed to Warwick Road at the south end of the Borough, has been very fully discussed and at the present time townspeople _of Stratford are awaiting an announcement of the Railway Department’s intentions in the matter. But there has been no reference to a third alternative mentioned to the “Central Press” today. Briefly, it provides for the erection of an ‘island” station at the railway triangle at the intersection of Juliet and Celia Streets. The land adjacent is owned by the department and it was pointed out that in the event of the station having to be moved, the objection which was made to the Warwick Road proposal, namely, that it was too far from the business centre, would not apply. When interviewed by telephone to-day the Acting District Engineer at Wanganui informed the “Central Press” that he had no knowledge of the proposal to shift the station near the triangle. The position will probably be clarified at the end of this month when it is expected that the Minister of Railways, Hon. D. G. Sullivan, will visit Stratford.
