COMPETITIONS AT WAIPUKU L. Fryday Defeats AllComers The challenge issued by L. Fryday. of Waipuku, against all-comers fop the Taranaki weight-lifting championship, was decided at Fryday's gymnasium last night. There was a large attendance, visitors being present from all parts of the province. Accompanied by a purse of £lO deposited by the challenger was a silver cup presented by Mr J. Batee, of the Club Hotel, Stratford. Fryday retained the championship after a very interesting contest. In which he again demonstrated his prowess in weightlifting. .
There were four contestants for the championship, which included conditions in one-hand (long or short-arm) and two-handed lifts. In the former Fryday led with 1701bs, beating O. Harris (1051bs), T. Reader (lOBlbft) and W. Keegan (lOOlbs). In the twohanded competition Fryday’s lift was 2401b5, Harris (210Ibs), Reader (1701 b Keegan (1701bs). An exhibition of muscle-control was> given by Fryday in which he astonished the spectators with his powers in this direction, and he was loudly applauded on his displays during the evening. On the programme also was a weight-lifting competition between three young members of the gymnasium, and their splendid physique was evidence of the benefit derived from the training received. In a onearm contest C. Webb, who received a Moyes being second with 1421b5. The judge and announcer was Mr T. Kirkwood, of Stratford, and In presenting the cup and prizes spoke of ! the good results obtained from the sports of wrestling, boxing and weightlifting, which were a feature of Fryday's gymnasium. It was felt by the Waipuku Club members that they were not being given the support to which they were entitled from the four associations in Taranaki. The. two-hours’ programme, continued Mr Kirkwood, had been much enjoyed, there being some first-class exhibitions, which were a credit to Mr Fryday and his pupils. AR regretted that he was shifting his restdeopu to New Plymouth, and that his seryloes would not be available to the youth' of the district fo the same extent as in the past. Many of hi® pupils were striking examples; of the hygienic benefits accruing from the exercises which they learned under his tuition, concluded Mr Kirkwood.
Supper was served to the visitors at the conclusion of the evening.
