BY-ELECTION RESULTS

Messrs H. E. Lawrence And H. S. Sinclair Successful

At the poll taken yesterdlay to fill two vacancies on the Straitford Borough Council caused by the resignations of Dr. W. P. P. Gordon and Mr R. R. Curtis, Mr H. E. Lawrence topped the poll with 209 votes and Mr H. S. Sinclair with 176 votes was the other successful candidate. Mr E. W. Hancock was only six votes below Mr Sinclair. The figures are:— Elected. Lawrence, H. E 209 Sinclair, H. S 176 Not Elected. Hancock, Enoch Wood .... 170Crowe, John William 152 Jeffares, Benjamin 110 Davis, Arthur Robert ...... 55 Wood, James 45! Intormel < Out of a roll number of approximately 2400 only 502 people voted. The official count will take place at the Borough Chambers at 10 o’clock to-morrow morning. As a member of the legal profession in Stiiatford for a long period, Mr Lawrence is well known and h’i Js a keen tennis and badminton player, He is secretary of the Stratford Tennis Club and the Central Taranaki junior tennis competition executive. On a number of occasions he has trenchantly criticised the policy of the Council and the Domain Board, particu'arly in regard to the relaying of the tennis courts, end he vigorously opposed the felling of pine trees in King Edward Park. As J a result of his agitation several citi- ' zens applied to the Supreme Count for an injunction to prevent the fell- | ing of the trees.

Mr Sinclair, who is a builder by trade, is vice-president of the Stratford bitnch of the Labour Party and is a member of the executive of the Stratford branch of the Crippled Children Society. When resident at Tangarakau he assisted in the formation of the Central Taranhki School Committees’ Association.
