HOCKEY UMPIRES

TARANAKI ASSOCIATION MEETS Results Of Examinations 1 The names of those umpires successful in Taranaki A grade practical and theory examinations were announced as follows at a meeting of the Taranaki Hockey Umpires’ Association at Stratford last night: — Theory: Mrs M. W. Priest (Hawera), Messrs J. Gribble (Hawera), A. E. Williams (New Plymouth), J. Young R. Duncan (Manaia), M. E. Tichenor (Manaia), L. G. McInnes (Stratford), L. Weedon (Eltham), A. J. Bennett (Eltham), E. Reed (Te Wera), W. M. Elder (Strathmore), A. Franks (Strathmore), R. Murphy (Huiroa), Thompson (Strathmore). Practical: Messrs Gribble, Williams, Young, Tichenor and Duncan. The examiners were Messrs M. W. Priest (Hawera), I. C. Gerrand (Hawera) and N. O. Ebbett (Stratford). It was recommended that instead of umpires being appointed always to matches ih their own divisions the selections be made more on a provincial basis. To obviate occasional shortages of referees it was pointed out that early matches could sometimes be taken by umpire-players waiting to participate in a later game. A long discussion on the interpretation of rules followed. A recommendation that the Taranaki Hockey Association should be requested to seek more newspaper publicity for hockey was approved. Hockey with about 600 players taking part each Saturday, deserved more consideration, members suggested. The decision to ask the hockey association to take action was made on the motion of Mr H. C. Johnson, Stratford, in preference to a proposal by Mr N. O. Ebbett that each umpire should supply a short report on the games he controlled. Mr Ebbett presided over an attendance of 20 from Hawera, Eltham, Kaponga, Stratford, Huiroa and New Plymouth.
