SPRINGBOKS WIN EASILY Victorians Beaten 45—11 Press Association —Copyright. Melbourne, June 13. Fielding almost their strongest available team the Springboks defeated Victoria yesterday by 45 points to 11 in (the presence of a crowd of 15,000 people. The Springboks outclassed Victoria in all oepaFt merits of the game except in loose forward play in which the local team played with exceptional dash. However, the Springboks won almost every scrum, enabling the half Craven to set his backs going in spectacular passing rushes w’hich often left the Victorians standing. Early indications were that despite strenuous training the Victorians would suffer an overwhelming defeat and at hJalf-time the Springboks led by 35 points to six. After toe interval the Victorians played much better. The backs gained confidence and was frequently dangerous. l and the forwards hustled the visitors. For 20 minutes from the beginning
of the second half the Victorians dominated the game and with ten minutes left the score was: Spring boks 25, Victoria 11. The Springboks gained a definite ascendency towards the close. The reliability of Brand’s kicking wat» responsible in a large measure for the Springboks’ .comfortable win. Brand converted five tries and kicked two penalty goals, a total of 16 points. His display as full_back was magnificent. He never missed a ball and frequently initiated scoring movements. Craven and the winger Lyst'r were the outstanding Springbok backs. The best forwards were ho.tz, whose hooking was superb, Vanderberg, Nel and the two Louws. The chief weakness of the Springboks appeared to be the inside backs who handled well bu/t were too prone to run across field. Summed up, the game can be described as a highly successful dress rehearsal from ths Springbok viewpoint for the more strenuous games ahead.
