CORONATION COMMITTEE

FINAL MEETING Profits For Tree Planting The Stratford coronation committee was disbanded last evening after a meeting held to deal with accounts and consider the disposal of the profits. The surplus of £2B 14s lid is to be devoted to the cost of tree planting in Broadway north and south. Those present were the Mayor, Mr J. W. McMillan, Messrs. G. C. Grace (secretary), Percy Thomson, C. Campbell, J. Morrison, D. Steven, A. E. Pollock, W. J. Polson M.P., D. J Malone, R. F. Harkness, Mesdames Steven, Thomson, and G. Lamplough. Altogether the celebrations had been quite a success and were a credit to the town, said Mr McMillan before proceeding to refer to the financial position.

Statements before the meeting showed that the Coronation Ball had shown a net profit of £3l 17 Is, the total receipts being £B5 15s 6d. The receipts- from the play staged by the Drama League were £29 8s lid and the net profit £9 12s 4d. The cost 6f flags for school children was £lO 14s 6d and the only other expense was a sum of £2 to repair damage to hall scenery, leaving a profit on the whole of the celebrations of £2B 14s lid.

The Mayor remarked upon the ex* penditure incurred by the Drama League, stating that a lot of it bad not been submitted for the approval of the finance committee. However a profit had been shown and he was not very concerned about the matter. In connection with the tree planting scheme Mr Thomson said It was proposed to plant 98 trees at an estimated cost of £5O.

On the motion of Mr Harkness It was decided that the credit balance be used toward the coat of planting the trees. No support was forthcoming for Mr Pollock’s amendment that £lO 10s from the ball profits be voted to the Crippled Children Society. The Borough Council was recommended to donate pipes to be used used for supporting the trees. Dr Steven thought that if an peal was made_for the balance of the amount required residents would make a good response. A sub-committee comprising Messrs Thomson, Harkness, Campbell and Mrs Lamplough was appointed to work in conjunction with the Council in regard to tree planting. A vote of thanks was accorded the ladies who assisted with the ball, also the Drama League, and lettars of appreciation will be sent. The work of the Mayor as chairman of the committee and of Mr Grace, the town clerk, as secretary, was also placed on record.
