BEGGAR UNDERWORLD
WIDESPREAD ORGANISATION Jewellery And Motor-Cars Press Association—Copyright. Vienna, June 3. The arrest of two thieves charged with stealing valuable jewellery and £4O in cash has revealed the existence of a highly organised beggar underworld. , The victims of the theft were a man and his wife, who supplemented a comfortable pension by professional begging. Their practice was to dress in poor clothes and drive in a luxurious motor-car to various villages. They would leave the car on the outskirts and visit the houses, pleading that they were starving and had no homes. They bought possessions from their profits.
The police also discovered a market where “starving children” were hired to beggars at fees ranging from sixpence to two shillings a day.
