APPEAL TO LEAGUE
SPANISH QUESTION WITHDRAWAL OF VOLUNTEERS Firm Stand Demanded By Delegate At Geneva Press Association —Copyright. (Received 11.40 a.m.) May 28. Speaking at the League session at Geneva to.day, Mr Anthony Eden said the replies from the Governments with reference to the withdrawal of volunteers varied in temper, but they by no means precluded tihe possibility of an agreement. Occasionally the tendency had been shown to misunderstand Britain’s motives in Spain. No details were available*, but at a conservative estimate more than 20,000 refugees had been transr ported by British ships. The charges of partiality were unjustified. Senor Delvayo, saying that t'hei Valencia Government accepted the proposals for the withdrawal of volunteers, demanded that the League take a firm stand to save Spain from foreign aggression. He deplored the fact that between 70,000 and 80,000 Italians had poured into a sovereign, indiependent, country in order to hew their way by fire and sford into the capital. After accusing trie Germans of razing Guernica, the, ancient Basque capital, Senor Delvayo concluded: “The fact that Italians, taken prisoner in the last battle were equipped with gas masks gives reason to fear that gas may be used in an attempt to break into Bilbao.’’ Mr W. Jordan (New Zealand) asked the Council to support tfhe cessation of hostilities. The meeting was adjourned.
