PROGRESS OUTLINED Mr J. A. Lee’s Statement Press Association—Copyright. Wellington, May 20. Mr J. A. Lee said to-day that; 'the lowest tenders for the construction of dwellings at Palmerston North and Wanganui under the Government’s housing scheme were submitted by Townshend, Ltd., and Higgins and Arcus respectively. Their tenders were substantially the lowest. If these firms completed; certain formalities to the satisfaction of the Department of Housing Construction they would probably receive the eonti acts. There were 24 houses in the Palmerston North group, the tender of Higgins and Arcus relating to 13 and that of Townshend, Ltd., to the remaining 11. The Wanganui group comprised 25 houses. Mr Lee said a feature of the Palmerston North and Wanganui schemes was the provision made for the construction of a limited number of two-unit houses. This would also be a feature of all future schemes. Tenders were now being called at Hastings and Oamaru. So far aS Oamaiu was concerned, alternative quotes were being asked for Oanwrustone for chimneys and piles against concrete. The Cabinet had approved of the purchase of land at New Plymouth from (the New top King Estate. The Cabinet had also approved of the acquisition of fetid at Otahuhu for housing purposes. The Patea Wbrough Council-offered land at £1 a section The land in question was sufficient for 34 houses.
