AMALGAMATED SCHOOLS

NOVEL POSITION ARISES Institution In Wairarapa Press Association —Copyright. Masterton, May 21. A novel position has arisen regarding the organisation and staffing of Wairarapa College, which is an amalgamation. of the Wairarapa High School and the Mas'.erton Technical School. Under the advice of the Education Department the board That hitherto administered the two schools has? fjeen proceeding with the organisation and staffiing of the new combined school. The task was far advanced to completion, but under an opinion now obtained from the SolicitorGeneral, Mf H. H. Cornish, it appears that the existing board* has no power to administer and control the combined school. I The position was explained to the board by the Minister of Education, Hon. P. Fraser, who attended a special meeting of the board last night, accompanied by Mr N. T. Lambourne, Director of Education, iand: Mr E. Caradus, inspector of secondary schools. / A new board is’ to be constituted by Order_in-Council. on the same basis of representation as the present board. The work of staffing the new school will have to be done over again. The amalgamated school will now start its career at the beginning of 1938, instead of at the beginning of the last term of this year. The Minister made-it clear that the board had (acted on the advice of the department, which had been given in good faith. His own opinion was that the spirit and the intention of the law had been observed, but the opinion of the Solicitor-General showed that the letter of the law hhd not.
