COMMISSIONER’S ADVICE Before They Start Courting Sydney, May 3. “Catch them early before they start courting," is the advice of the Apprenticeship Commissioner, Mr. Hilnf.yrej, on the education of apprentices. “As soon as a youth starts courting he loses 1 interest in his classes,” Mr. Mclntyre told the Slaters (State) Apprenticeship Council. Recommendations for technical education for .apprentices in the trade were made by the. council, and the Commissioner promised to see what could be done. “A boy should be given the chance, say at 17, to know if he Is ini erested in the industry,” said Mr. G. Kirkham, of the Slaters., Tilers and Stanglers’ Union. . “He should be shown how to measure roofs in several designs and. set out roofs for slates and tiles.” Mr. Mclntyre: Seventeen may be too late. We must catch them before they start courting. The council approved of • a new award, for apprentices In tile trade. The award now makes, provision for trainee as well as indentured apprentices.
