GAMBLING ON WHARVES

Charged with playing “two up’’ and crown and anchor on the central wharf on May 4. eight men, some of whom were described by the police as professional gamblers, appeared before Mr Orr Walker, S.M., in the Police Court to-day. Detective Sergeant McHugh said that for some time past there had been numerous complaints about gambling on the wharves. Thp usual games were crown and anchor and "two up.” "Two or three men among this lot are professional gamblers and are practically making a living from it,” said Mr McHugh. Between eight and ten o’clock in the morning these men were an annoyance to men who -were there to obtain work. They were not connected with the Waterside Workers’ Union. Fines ranging from £5 down to £1 were imposed.
