RECORD INCREASE
Wellington City Estimates Press Association—Copyright. Wellington, May 3. An increase of £56,750 in the cost of administering Wellington City affairs was disclosed when the City Council adopted the current year's estimates to-night. This is a record increase, of which £12,000 it due to the 40-hour week for 1937-38, and £22,900 for the increased cost of materials normally used by the corpoi|.tion. The hospital levy is also up to £BOOO, and the fire board levy by £lOOO. Despite the added burden, only the* city’s normal activities 'will be carried on this year. Departmental committees;’ estimates are generally pruned in order to keep the rising costs ot administration in check.
