In one of the most remarkable ship ping accidents at Melbourn for many years, a coastal freighter, the Aroona. escaped undamaged after ploughing right through a pier at Williamstown near Port Melbourne, lat. on Saturday night. About 2500 square feet of pier was completely demolished, leaving the sea f nd of the pi r isolated from the shore end. The damage is estimated .0 be £5OOO. The cause of the accident is believed to have been the failure of the Aroona’s steering gear. Hundreds of huge logs, piles and planks floated across to the opposite side of 'the bay, eight miles awiay, to-■ day. They constitute a danger ’to shipping.
