SELF-SUFFICIENCY PLAN
GERMAN EXPERIMENT ■SHORTAGE OF ESSENTIAL ARTICLES . ’ Government Commandeering Supplies Received 12.45 p.m. London, April 23. The Daily Telegraph’s Berlin correspondent says:— “The first stages of the German experiment in- self-sufficiency have caused a shortage of numerous essential articles, or the Employment of inferior material, for which an increase in price | is usually ■ demanded. “The authorities, declaring i that the difficulty is transitory, ■ have commandeered large quantities of barley from the breweries, which, it is feared, will affect the quality and quantity of the famous Munich beer. They have also ordered the breweries to replace 50 per cent, of their motor transport with horses, owing to the shortage of motor tyres, although thereby another difficulty will be created, as fodder is lacking. “Even amateur poultrykeepers are killing their fowls, as food is unobtainable. “The cotton shortage has produced a Decree ordering the replacement of cotton by synthetic wool made from cellulose, which, if not previously laundered, worn next to the skin causes a rash. It also requires care in washing, as it rips when wet.”
