WAGES NOT PAID.

Charges Against Boardinghouse Keeper. On the information of the Inspector of Awards, Mr. D. T. C. Brayshaw. Ada Cox, boardinghouse-keeper, of Stratford, was charged in the Stratford Magistrate’s Court to-day with breaches of the New Zealand Private Hotel Employees’ Award. Mr. Brayshaw said that on March 4 a complaint was received that two workers were not being paid the award rates, and on investigation it was found that there was no wages or time book.

One girl was employed from January 21 to March 6 as a housemaid, and received £1 a week instead of £l/12/6. On February 2 a girl was employed at 12/6 a week, and on the date that the other girl left the amount was to £l/2/6. This employee also should have been paid £l/12/6. Mr. R. R. Tyrer said his client had been unfortunate. After she had taken possession of the boardinghouse the furniture had been taken by the owner and sold, and she had to buy new furniture. Counsel was Instructed that she had no notice about the wages. Had she known that she was to be a party to the award she would have applied for exemption. He was instructed that both girls had been exceedingly well treated. In view of the fact, that the arrears of wages would have to be paid, he asked that no further penalty he imposed. The Inspector suggested that the question of penalty be deterred until the arrears of wages were paid. The Magistrate?, Mr. W. H. Woodward, said he would adjourn the case for one month, and when fixing the penalty would take into account the position in regard to the wages in arrears.
