NAVAL VISIT.
AUSTRALIAN SQUADRON
Auckland Last Port of Call.
Press Association —Copyright. Auckland, April 16. Silently and impressively the remaining five ships of the Royal Australian naval squadron entered Waitemata harbour at 11 o'clock this morning. Auckland is the last port of call for the Australian warships. As the cruiser Sydney led the line past, the Devonport naval base guards mounted the quarterdecks of the -New Zealand ships, but the tribute was accompanied only by shrilling bosun’s whistles. Official calls were made this morning on Rear-Admiral. Lane-Pool in the Canberra, by Commander C. B. Tinsley, officer in charge of the Devonport naval base, the Mayor, Mr. K. Davis, and Mr. H. R. McKenzie, de-puty-chairman of the harbour- board. To give the officers and men of the Australian squadron an opportunity of visiting Rotorua during their brief stay at Auckland, the Government Tourist Bureau is endeavouring to arrange a special excursion by train for Sunday. A programme for the proposed visit has been drawn up and distributed to the various warships, and it will depend on the response received whether a special train will be run. An officer of the Canberra stated that the proposal would be welcomed by the whole squadron, but it was not possible to say off-hand whether sufficient men would be available to justify the running of a special train.
