UNUSUAL POSITION.

Rates Paid, But No Title To Land. Press Association—Copyright. Hastings, April 17. A most unusual position has arisen regarding a section in Hastings tio which it wat thought the Heretaunga Dairy Company could claim the title. The dairy company has been paying rates on this section for the past 25 years, and it has now been ascertained that it has no title to the land, but merely a drainage right. Accordingly, the company has asked the Hastings Borough Council to remove its name from the valuation roll as far as this property is. concerned. A request was also made by the company for a refund of rates paid during the past 25 years. The Borough Council has agreed to adjust the valuation roll, but the company is to be adv.t.-ed that the council does not possess legal power to refund rates.
