MAN AND WIFE INJURED. Crossing Smash at Avondale. press Association —Copyright. Auckland, April 15. Thrown on to the road through the. door of ;heir motor-car when it was involved in a collision with an afternoon passenger drain to Whangarei, a man and wife were seriously injured at a level crossing at Avondale. Both occupants, Mr. William Joughin, aged 56, residing at Mount Eden, and Mrs. Joughin. aged 45, suffered head injuries, concussion and shock. Proceeding up a steep grade in the direction of the city, the car apparently struck ‘the carriage immo (iiately following the locomotive. The vehicle was dragged about 15 yard's before it came to rest in an upright position several yards clear of /the ’•ailway track. There were apparently no eye-Wit-nessFS to the collision, but residents who were attracted to |he scene by ■ the noise of the impact found Mr. and Mrs. Joughin lying some distance from the vehicle when ihe left, hand I door was carried away. Los than a week ago a system of v.’ig-wag signals, which had been installed at the crossing for some years, was replaced hy red flashing lights noting in conjunction with a warning hell. Residents who use the road regularly alleged that in strong sunlight the signals ware indistinguishable, and with the sound )f ".he bell couniteracted by the noise of an approaching train ihe system operated efficiently only in darkness. Mr. and Mrs. Joughin were removed to the Auckland hospital.
